Poetry

Facilitated discussion group with a  focus on poetry in English written over the past five centuries.  Meeting on Sunday evenings at 8 o'clock, beginning on January 11^th 2009.  The first  two-three weeks we'll read aloud, chant, and sing outstanding medieval and  modern ballads.  The group will set the pace and individual participants  can bring in samples of work in whichever category we are immersed in to  share.  I will provide a curriculum and background and will make regular  announcements on this list to update interested readers.  After our  discussion of ballads has peaked, we'll next look at small, perfect lyrics from  different eras; then more complex forms:  sonnets and odes; and end with  dramatic poetry:  dialogues and monologues.  Along the way we will  focus on the diverse work of individual poets.

Class on Lashon Hara for women a shiur in English and Hebrew about lashon hara based on the teachings of Chafetz Chaim and Ben Ish Chai. The laws of proper speech will teach us how to look at people, speak to people, and speak about people - they reflect the Torah's wisdom.
